Dublin Lectures
Taught lectures across a range of ICS modules are available to students each academic year (Sept – April). Lectures are held on one Saturday each month during the academic year and are taught by experienced industry professionals and academics. This learning environment provides students with a firm grounding for their career in the shipping industry, as well as providing the ideal preparation for sitting the Spring examinations.
The following are the modules currently available:
Module: Introduction to Shipping
Lecturer: Mr. Arthur Kearney MICS
Introduction to Shipping provides an overview of the shipping industry. It defines and describes all aspects of shipping, the personnel who work in it, the history behind it and touches on the financial side of the industry. The course also covers all forms of shipping documentation, ship types, trade routes and ports . In providing an authoritative assessment of global shipping, Introduction to Shipping is suitable not only for personnel within the industry, but also for those in other professions who wish to expand their general understanding of this exciting and dynamic industry.
Module: Shipping Business
Lecturer: Mr. Alexis Morley MICS
There are hundreds of roles in the shipping industry and they all fit into the whole like the pieces of a jigsaw puzzle. This course describes in detail the vertical and horizontal integration of business, and compares the roles of the shipowner, the charterer, the shipbroker, the agent and the duties of back-office staff. It explains the specifics of charter parties and the various ways in which ships are employed, including the cargoes they carry, as well as the buying and selling of ships.
Module: Economics of Sea Transport & International Trade
Lecturers: Mr. Glenn Murphy FICS & Mr. Matthew Pavitt MICS
This course describes the economic and commercial issues involved in the chartering, ownership and management of oceangoing ships. Starting with a clear explanation of the supply and demand for shipping, the course evolves to examine the wider shipping industry – including tankers, dry cargo, the liner trade and the sale and purchase of ships – and describes the factors within world trade which contribute to the up and down cycles that affect the shipping industry. The management of vessel operations as well as the information that shipbrokers need in order to operate within the industry are covered.
Module: Legal Principles in Shipping Business
Lecturer: Mr. Cyril Cawley M.A., LL.B., Solicitor (Admitted in Ireland, England and Wales)
Legal Principles in Shipping Business describes the way that shipping law affects how the industry conducts itself. The course explains the nuts and bolts of charter parties and different types of shipping documentation such as bills of lading and waybills. It also describes the principles and the essential ingredients of contract Law, the role of arbitration in dispute resolution and examines the concepts of common law, case law and precedent and how these contrast with statute law.
Module: Port Agency
Lecturer: Mr. Derek Dunne FICS
In an industry as international as shipping, it is impossible for a ship operator to have offices in every port where its ships might call. Instead, ship operators rely on a network of port agents to act as their eyes and ears to ensure the safe and secure running of their ships. As the representative of the ship, the port agent helps keep global trade moving and profits flowing. This course examines in detail this critical front-line role. From the day-to-day duties expected of a port agent and the legal background to the role, to the mass of documentation needed and relationships with principals, Port Agency guides students through this fascinating aspect of the shipping industry.
Module: Port and Terminal Management
Lecturer: Mr. Arthur Kearney MICS
Port and terminal managers have had to adapt fast to meet rising demand driven by continuing high levels of world trade. Globalisation is putting port models under increasing pressure to remain competitive in fickle cargo markets . Increasing productivity – through expansion or better utilisation of existing assets – is a must for economic survival. This course considers all operational aspects of port functions, from financing, legal concerns and planning to competition, equipment and marketing.
Module: Liner Trades
Lecturer: Mr. Sean Douglas FICS
‘Liner Trades’ covers the types of vessels operating liner services and their trade routes, and provides a comprehensive description of modern container ship operations and management . Co-operative ventures and consortia within the various service networks are detailed in the course, as are the financial and legal aspects of the trades and various types of documentation involved.
TutorShip
Study by correspondence is an ideal method of learning for those involved in the busy and demanding atmosphere of shipping.
TutorShip is the trademark name for the distance learning program of Institute Teaching Centre (ITC) that was developed to provide individual tutoring to students wishing to sit the ICS examinations. It is designed to be flexible enough to accommodate working students wherever they may be in the world. The TutorShip courses are written by specialists and structured in such a way that the student may start the course at any time and study at his or her own pace.
TutorShip students may enroll for as few or as many courses as they wish. The student is sent all the material for the course(s) chosen and is allotted a personal tutor for each subject.
Each individual subject is divided into a number of lessons, usually ten, and at the end of every lesson there is an assignment that should be sent to the Tutor for comment and grading. This ensures direct contact between the student and the Tutor that enables individual attention to be given according to the student’s needs.
When the assignment has been marked it is returned to the student via the TutorShip office. In this way not only does the student benefit from the Tutor’s advice but also TutorShip is able to monitor overall progress and add its value where appropriate.
Note: Enrolment with the Dublin Lectures or TutorShip is separate from enrolment for the Institute’s Examinations. Contact our Secretariat at
